The Chrysler Slant 6 would have to be the best known inline 6 cylinder engine in the world. The slant six was given the family name as the G engine at Chrysler. The Slant 6 is designed that the cylinders are inclined at a 30-degree angle from the crankshaft centerline. The 30° inclination of the Slant 6 allowed for a long stroke engine to have an overall shorter height allowing for the slant 6 to be used in cars with lower hood lines. Another bonus of the slanted engine block allowed lots of room for intake and exhaust manifolds

The Slant 6 engine was introduced in the early 1960s, The 170 cubic inch “LG” had a lower deck height compared to the 225 cubed larger Slant 6 with the 225 Mopar given the factory name of the RG, having a taller engine block and crankshaft stroke. Plymouth called the Slant 6 power plant the “30-D Economy Six” engine, the “30-D” referring to the 30° cylinder block angle.

The G-engine was used in the North American from 1960 through to 1983 in cars, Chrysler used the Slant 6 in trucks until 1987 where it was called the 3.7L inline 6, The Slant 6 was being built in Mexico as of the year 2000.

It doesn’t matter what you call it, Mopar, Chrysler or Valiant The mighty Slant Six has a reputation For its torque ,economy & more power than other 6 cylinder engines of a similar capacity , The slant six was first introduced in 1959 The slant 6 replaced the early flat head engine. For some reason Chrysler built most of its slant 6 engines with a restrictive single barrel carburettor, with this restriction the slant six was never known for its high speed until the super six project was developed by Chrysler. The biggest improvement in all round performance on a slant is to improve inlet & exhaust manifold with a 2 or 4 barrel carb. With its single barrel standard carburettor, the slant 6 in- line engine tilted to around 30 degrees had a great balance of economy and power plus bucket loads of torque,. The “Super Six” equipped with its two-barrel Carter twin throat carb helped the slant six mopar engine come alive, It is reported that crusing down the highway fuel economy as high as 30 mpg could be achieved. Another version of the slant six was rated at 160 hp., Heavy duty slant 6 engines were used in trucks & busses in both Australia & the united states The heavy duty Slant six engines were equipped with a twin row timing gear set but for some reason they only used a single roller timing chain chrome compression rings stelite exhaust valves & in some engines a high volume oil pump Chrysler inline sixes pre 1960 were a flat head style six cylinder, with the intro of the slant six it was used in passenger cars until 1983 & Chrysler used its slant six in trucks through to 1987, The slant six was used in the marine industry into the early 90s

The Hyper pack upgrade was available for Mopar 170 and 225 slant six engines, the package included a high lift cam 4 barrel AFM Carter carburator. The ultra long inlet manifold tubular exhaust headers; raised compression & tuned exhaust. The 170 CI slant six was rated at 195 hp What a lot of performance straight six engine fans do not know is the hyper pack manifold was designed for the smaller capacity 170 CI engine & not the 225 slant six that was available in Australia & was fitted in the S series Valiant, R series Valiant, AP5 Valiant, AP6 Valiant & the early V series Valiants until the 245 Hemi engine was available. Australian built Chryslers were exported to both New Zealand & South Africa With the hyper pack manifold is now very hard to find there are a few aftermarket manufacturers now making performance manifolds for the slant six engines. The most unique is the Australian made AussieSpeed/ PP&R Hurricane SL6 manifold to suit both 2 & 4 barrel carbs. With a lot of the manifolds available most were made along the lines of the factory uneven length inlet runners that did nothing more than mount a larger carb to the engine & performance through design was over looked until the release of the AussieSpeed hurricane. The even length runners make the air fuel ratio a lot more even making the engine easier to tune, better cylinder fill, There is also a water heated plenum model that can be fitted for better cold engine running.

The Pacer was the Sporty beginning with its high powered slant six engine up graded sports suspension, dash board tacho sports exhaust & floor mounted gear shift. The horsepower rating for the mighty slant was 170 to 180 HP & flew down the quarter mile in 17.8 seconds
